Sponsors:
A sponsor for Confirmation is a public role in the Church. Before selecting a sponsor, the Confirmation candidate and their parents should reflect on whether the person you are considering meets the requirements. Family members sometimes feel compelled to ask someone because of tradition or other obligations, unaware that the proposed sponsor no longer practices the Catholic Faith.
Remember, the issue here for a person who is taking a public role in the Church is not simply whether the sponsor is a good-living person with high values. That is presumed. No, it is much more! Does the sponsor you are considering practice the Catholic faith in accordance with these basic requirements:
+ At least 16 years of age and fully initiated in the Catholic Church, having received Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion
+ Attends Mass regularly on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation
+ Sincerely strives to follow the moral teachings of the Catholic Church
+ Was married in the Catholic Church (or with appropriate dispensation). If single, is living a chaste life and not cohabitating with another person.
In the event that the person you are considering to be the sponsor does not fulfill these requirements, you could possibly discuss this matter with them. An invitation to be a sponsor can be a “graced moment,” inviting a family member or friend to turn again to Jesus Christ through the Catholic Church.
Please note that a PARENT CANNOT BE A SPONSOR for their child.
The SPONSOR ELIGIBILITY FORMS are due to St. Bede’s Office of Religious Education BY DECEMBER 8, 2026.
